The challenge of business change
The world of business has changed dramatically over the last couple of decades. We operate in a world where the competition changes as quickly as it comes. Every one is fighting for market position and world markets fluctuate much more frequently than they did only one decade ago.
To businesses this means instability and unpredictability which makes forcasting profits almost impossible.
The variables in your business are more variable now than ever before and this creates challenges that require responsiveness to change.
Your staff are your biggest asset
People change their jobs more often now than ever before. Raw material costs fluctuate more dramatically than ever before. The demands of the consumer or your direct customer change more frequently than before.
All of this means that now more than ever the most important asset in your company is the people.
Why you need the right people for change
Because with the right people who have the right attitude and responsiveness to change you can respond quickly to business demands. A workforce resistant to change spells one thing. Demise.
Business systems need positive people to work
Business Systems
- Six Sigma
- JIT (Just-in-time)
- Poke Yoke
- Genba Kanri
- Pull Systems
- Standard operating procedures
- Work place management
The list goes on...
We all know the business tools used to improve efficiency. The ones that have spread from the Japanese motor industry or large US corporations. The list is huge:
All of these principles apply to any business, not just manufacturing. They can be used in an office environment as much as on the factory floor. But for these systems to work successfully the people within the company have to make them work, embrace them, then evolve or adapt them and then keep on doing so. This takes a certain mind set.
Experience of Change
Barry Richardson worked for NISSAN for 10 years as part of the engineering team. During this time he saw huge changes and was there when Renault took over the wheel and saw more changes. Change was a daily occurrence as was excellence, efficiency and more importantly, effectiveness.
In the years after leaving NISSAN Barry's job took him around Europe and the UK visiting many other automotive and tech companies in places such as the Czeck republic, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales and during this time the different way in which companies operated was very interesting.
A 'Change Agent'
Following this, employed in a company undergoing a change Barry was appointed as a change agent and as part of the team looked at Vision, Mission statement, working practices, company image and much more. There was massive resistance to change but by changing the mind set of the employees and even some of the management they recognised the benefits of the changes and then embraced their new knowledge and skills to roll out the improvements throughout the entire business.
Passing on the Knowledge.
To help get his new engineering business off the ground an ex-colleague employed Barry as operations manager. By using business improvement techniques and implementing clear and effective procedures within the company together with a very professional and driven approach saw the company win a large contract with a major international company to supply bespoke machinery. This led to substantial 'spin off contracts' and increased the companies turnover by hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Leadership and Change
To change an existing culture is not easy and requires strong leadership, a clear vision and determination. But it cannot be forced onto the employees. They will resist more strongly than ever if forced to change.
